Tourist heading to parts of Europe could never have a fulfilling European trip without visiting its theaters. Theaters, cinema, and films are a venerable heritage of European nations. That’s why its no surprise some of the best Film Festivals in the world can only be found in London, to honor this long standing legacy of movies as an art.
The annual august event of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (abbreviated as EIFF) is among the longest constantly operating film festivals in London if not on the planet, meaning it has faithfully clunked its engines every year since 1947. The Edinburgh International Film Festival is part of the local festivity started by the Edinburgh Film Guild (also the oldest continually running Film Society in the world) for documentaries. At the time there were only a couple of other Film Festivals throughout the world; Cannes and Venice Film Festivals are the best. Due to hardly any films were made at this time (high cost productions), film festivals are also hardly needed.
The Times bfi London Film Festival is another emerging standard for film festivals in London. Screening 300 films from 60 participating countries, The Times bfi London Film Festival is really a large public film event, maybe rivaling Edinburgh International Film Festival. Now the festival is approaching its 50th year and with a heavy publicity by the British Film Institute and sponsorship by The Times newspaper, The Times bfi London Film Festival will be close to rivaling Toronto and Cannes for film festivals.
Another ambitious organization is the annual Belfast Film Festival that commenced in 1990. Like most film festivals in London, Belfast Film Festival was originally a feature for the West Belfast Festival until it was decided that Belfast Film Festival should be run as a self-regulating organization that will handle film festivals in London.
When huge successes from independent films made global successes, organizations made distinctive efforts to capitalize on this emerging marketable prospect. The Raindance Film Festival is the largest independent film festivals in London since 1992 to support works such as Pulp Fiction, The Blair Witch Project, Capturing the Friedmans, Memento, Oldboy, Girlfriend in a Kimono, & End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones.
With patrons like Elton John and Ian McKellen, supporters such as citigroup, JPMorgan, UBS and Renault, The London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival has stood on solid grounds among the finest film festivals in London. It started rather informally and it was on its 3rd annual presentation when the event did truly become the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and lesbian Penny Ashbrook on its helm.
