A Celebration Of Small Town America in Maine

During the Lisbon Falls annual Moxie Festival visitors gather to watch the Moxie Horse Mobile make its way down the parade route. This unique site represents one of the many unique promotional campaigns that made Moxie Americas most popular soft drink in the early 1900s. Where else but in Maine will you find a horse riding in the back of a car or the only festival centered around a soda in the world? Festival organizers of the Lisbon Falls annual Moxie Festival say the festival has come to be a celebration of small town America. Its this small town charm and the friendly folks in Lisbon Falls, Maine who make visitors feel welcome year round.
Moxie; Maines Official State Soft Drink
So what is Moxie? Its a snappy soda, originally patented by its creator, Dr. Augustin Thompson, who was born in Union, Maine. Moxie was promoted as a cure-all called Moxie Nerve Food. You can still find Moxie lovers today who drink a can everyday to promote vigor and good health. Even former President Calvin Coolidge was said to enjoy the beverage during his time in the nations highest office. Search online today and youll find numerous web sites devoted to the drink, its memorabilia, the Moxie culture and suggestions on where to buy it.
Three Days Of Moxie Festivities
The Moxie Festival, a three-day event which takes place in early July, and features old-fashion fun for everyone to enjoy. The weekends festivities include a pancake breakfast, a car show, a firemans muster, a trivia contest, a bubble gum contest, and pony rides. A recipe contest is also held, in which a Moxie vinaigrette took the blue ribbon in 2004. For those who enjoy a good race, stick around for the 5K run held on Saturday and the canoe race held on Sunday. The best part of any festival is the delicious treats.
Visitors at the Moxie Festival can enjoy a refreshing treat; Moxie ice cream, served by Frank Anicetti, owner of the Kennebec Fruit Store, whose store is a makeshift Moxie memorabilia Mecca rather than a fruit store. One of the highlights of the weekend is the two-hour long parade along Main Street in Lisbon Falls where over 30,000 people are expect to line the route for the best view.
Out & About In Maine
While out and about in Maine its not uncommon to see a car proudly displaying a "Moxie Makes Mainers Mighty" bumper sticker. Along with the many festivals held throughout the state there are plenty of sites and attractions to explore. Among our childrens favorite place to visit while in Maine is the Maine Discovery Museum.

The Maine Discovery Museum is the largest childrens museum north of Boston. With seven permanent interactive exhibits exploring the worlds of nature, geography, childrens literature, music, art, science and anatomy theres plenty for families to explore together. Take a spin in a larger than life gyroscope that rotates you at its center or participate in one of many wonderful programs scheduled throughout the year. With so many hands -on exhibits and exciting programs theres always something new happening at the Discovery museum.
